Sun Flower Hill Farm sunflowers in front of white barn wedding venue

If you have been deep in the wedding venue rabbit hole lately, chances are Sunflower Hill Farm has already stopped your scroll at least once. And honestly, good. It deserves the attention.

Tucked into the rolling hills of Augusta, Missouri, right in the heart of Missouri wine country, Sunflower Hill Farm is the kind of place that makes couples feel something the moment they pull down the drive. I know because I have photographed weddings there, and I still feel it every time I arrive on a wedding morning.

As a St. Louis wedding photographer, I get to work at a lot of beautiful venues. But Sunflower Hill Farm has a specific kind of magic that is hard to manufacture and even harder to forget. This is my honest, behind-the-lens look at what makes it so special and why it might be exactly the right fit for your wedding day.

What Is Sunflower Hill Farm?

Sunflower Hill Farm is a family-owned event estate and working farm sitting on 130 acres in Augusta, Missouri, about 20 minutes west of Chesterfield. It was purchased in 2014 by Mike and Karen Koehneman, and Karen, a master gardener with a serious eye for detail, has spent years turning it into something that feels both grand and deeply personal at the same time.

What started as a small hobby farm, and before that a llama farm in the 1990s, has grown into one of the most thoughtfully designed wedding venues in the St. Louis area. Every corner of the property has been considered. Nothing feels like an afterthought.

The farm is a real working farm too, with an organic produce garden, a greenhouse, a chicken coop, and a CSA program for the surrounding community. That rootedness in the land is something you actually feel when you are there. It is not a fake-rustic venue slapping reclaimed wood on everything. It is the real thing.

The White Barn

The centerpiece of the property is a stunning white barn-style event center with indoor and outdoor seating. If you have seen photos from Sunflower Hill Farm weddings and thought, “how is a barn that elegant,” that is exactly the reaction Karen was going for.

The barn is bright, airy, and full of details that photograph beautifully from every angle. Chandeliers, clean lines, and a layout that works whether you are hosting an intimate gathering or a full reception. As a photographer, it is one of those spaces where the light does a lot of the work for you, and the architecture gives you something to work with no matter where you turn.

The Getting Ready House

This is one of the things I talk about every time someone asks me about this venue. The getting ready house is genuinely one of the nicest bridal preparation spaces I have worked in. It is a large farmhouse that feels like a home, not a holding room, and it gives the whole morning a different energy.

There is real space to move around, real natural light, and real warmth. That matters more than most couples realize when they are planning. The getting ready photos from Sunflower Hill Farm are consistently some of my favorites from any wedding I shoot there, because the space invites real moments instead of awkward ones.

The Outdoor Ceremony Space

The grounds at Sunflower Hill Farm are what you would expect from a property cared for by a master gardener. They are intentional, layered, and seasonal in a way that means your wedding will look different and honestly stunning no matter what time of year you choose.

The outdoor ceremony space sits within this beautifully cultivated landscape, and the surrounding scenery gives couples a backdrop that no floral budget could fully replicate. Rolling hills, mature trees, open sky. It photographs like a dream.

There is also a wine cellar on the property that doubles as a gorgeous intimate space for small receptions or portraits. If you have not seen photos from in there, get on their Instagram immediately.

The Onsite Florist: Moody Blooms

One of the things that genuinely sets Sunflower Hill Farm apart from other St. Louis area venues is the access to an onsite floral designer. Lucy at Moody Blooms brings a background in agriculture and a deep philosophy around seasonal, locally-inspired florals that aligns perfectly with everything the farm stands for.

Her work is not cookie-cutter wedding florals. It is considered, textural, and rooted in what is actually growing and blooming at that time of year. A November wedding at Sunflower Hill Farm is going to have a completely different floral story than an August one, and Lucy leans into that rather than fighting it. That is a creative collaborator worth having in your corner.

What Kind of Couple Gets Married at Sunflower Hill Farm?

In my experience photographing there, Sunflower Hill Farm attracts couples who want something that feels elevated without feeling stuffy. They want beauty that is organic and real, not manufactured. They care about the details but they also want the day to feel like them.

It is a venue that works for the couple who wants barefoot dancing in the barn and chandeliers overhead at the same time. The rustic and the refined coexist here in a way that most venues try and fail to pull off.

A Note on the Location

Augusta, Missouri is one of those places that people in St. Louis do not visit nearly enough, and out-of-town guests absolutely love. It is in the middle of Missouri wine country, which means your wedding weekend has a built-in itinerary for anyone coming in from out of town. The Katy Trail runs nearby, wineries are a short drive in every direction, and the Missouri River views along the way are genuinely stunning.

Twenty minutes from Chesterfield means it is close enough for convenience and far enough from the city to feel like a full escape. That is a balance most venue locations do not nail.

I Have Photographed Weddings at Sunflower Hill Farm

I want to be upfront about something. I am not on the official preferred vendor list at Sunflower Hill Farm. What I am is a St. Louis wedding photographer who has been trusted by couples getting married there and has spent real time learning that property I am referred by Sunflower Hill Farms a lot but I am not on their website.

I know where the light falls in the barn in the late afternoon. I know what the getting ready house looks like at 8am on a November morning versus an August one. I know the corners of the grounds that most people overlook and that produce some of the most unexpected and beautiful portraits of the day.

If you are considering Sunflower Hill Farm for your wedding and you want a photographer who already knows and loves the venue, I would love to be part of your day.
